His Story:
I grew up in a small town in Illinois, with my mom and 7 siblings. I enjoyed playing sports in high school, especially baseball. I also spent many days at the skateboard park in my hometown, along with my best friend Clayton. I joined the military right out of high school, and through my connections in the military, I ended up in Nebraska after my active duty service. I was the Safety Coordinator at Greenbrier Railway Services in Hershey, NE, and then moved to Kearney to work at Eaton. I received the opportunity to chase my childhood dream at the age of 30, I attended and graduated from the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center and became a police officer in Broken Bow, NE. I entered this profession because of the atmosphere, the like-minded people in the occupation, to help people in a time of need, and to help make sure that my family and others have a safe community to grow up in. I have since been awarded the taser instructor in our small department, I have numerous more goals to achieve in my new career. I have a wonderful wife Nissa Shelby who also served in the Nebraska National Guard and a 2 year-old son Bycen Shelby who loves everything his mom and dad do such as working out, mowing the lawn, shooting bows, and golfing. I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without the unwavering support from my loving family, and I wouldn’t get nearly as much enjoyment out of it without my son Bycen.
Military: I joined the Active Duty Army as an Airborne Infantryman in 2010. I went to Infantry Basic in September of 2010 and airborne school in January of 2011. I received my First duty station in Anchorage, AK with Baker Co 3-509th IN BN and was stationed there for 3 Years. My first deployment was to Zormat, Afghanistan as an automatic rifleman for the deployment and became a Team Leader when we got back stateside for 2 years. I PCS’d to Fort Bragg, NC in 2014 to A Co 1-325 AIR where I concluded my active service. I joined the Nebraska National Guard in 2016 during my ETS process as an 88M Motor Transport Operator assigned to Broken Bow, NE. During my time in the 1075th Transportation Company, I was the PT and Height and Weight NCO, I was also awarded the rank of CPL, and I was told it was the first time in a very long time that the unit had been awarded the rank of CPL. I was then sent to school and received my stripes as an SGT, shortly after I went to ALC and received my SSG after completing ALC. I worked on ADOS orders as a Transportation Movement NCO for the 734th coordinating missions that needed to be done and helping the downtrace units get some of their soldiers makeup drill days and the overall Physical Readiness for the state delivering the PT equipment to conduct the new ACFT. I transferred to 734th CSSB in Kearney, NE as an 89B ammunition specialist, and attended the Deployment to Qatar in 2021 as a contracting officers representative. I’m currently in my 14th year of service with no plans to stop, I currently have my SLC scheduled for this year to get closer to my goal of becoming a Sergeant First Class (E-7). I pride myself on my service as I have held every rank from E-1 fuzzy to where I currently am an E-6 Staff Sergeant. I know it's bad to say but the military was and is my life I love the atmosphere and the comradery. They say don’t let it define everything you do but it saved my life and taught me discipline which I badly needed and gave me a purpose. I'll never forget the experiences and the people I’ve met along the way.
